O termo ecologia foi criado em 1866 pelo biólogo e zoólogo alemão Ernst Haeckel (1834 - 1919), um dos maiores discípulos de Charles Darwin. Deriva de duas palavras gregas: oikos, "casa","habitação', e logia,"ciência". Associado ao meio ambiente, é referido a "casa dos seres vivos". As pesquisas sobre o assunto, no entanto, lembram a Antiguidade. O grego Teofrasto, seguidor do filósofo Aristóteles, foi o primeiro a observar e descrever as relações entre organismos entre si e o meio ambiente. Por isso, é considerado o primeiro ecologista da História.

The term ecology was created in 1886 by the ecologist and zoologist Ernst Haeckel (1834 - 1919) one of the great followers of Charlie Darwin. It comes from two greeks words : oikos,"home","habitacion",and logia,"science". Associated to nature, it refers to it as the "house of alive criatures". The researchs about the matter, on the other hand, date back to the Antiquity. The greek Teophratus, a follower of the philosofer Aristotle was the first to observe and describe the relacionchip of organisms among themselves and their surroundings. Therefore, he is considered the first ecologist of the history.
